A Bunch for the Weekend - # 100 - From the Archives

In April 2014 I started a series of weekly blog posts called "A Bunch for the Weekend" and they quickly became very popular among my blog visitors.

So today to celebrate my #100 posts in this series - I decided to dig deep in the archives and show the first ten arrangements that I posted back in 2014.

# 1

The thought was to inspire and show how to do simple and easy arrangements. Show how to create a quick and uncomplicated arrangement that anybody could do themselves to enjoy over the weekend.

# 2

This is the little "statement" that I add to the post - briefly explaining my thinking behind the posts:

"It's always a pleasure and lots of fun to buy a bunch of flowers for the weekend and this series of blog posts, called 'A Bunch for the Weekend, I will show you how you can make quick and easy flower arrangements for your home.

Buy the flowers where it's convenient and easy for you whether that is from a flower stall, farmers' market, the supermarket or a florist.

Always try to buy seasonal flowers - they will last longer and they will be a lot cheaper.

Make sure you condition the flowers as soon as you get home. Remove any foliage that will end up below the waterline in the vase. Trim the ends of the stems at an angle and put in fresh water as soon as possible."

A Bunch for the Weekend - # 84 - Blue Hydrangea and Delphiniums with Purple Trachelium

This week on 'A Bunch for the Weekend' - I'm working with some gorgeous blue Hydrangea, a very delicate light blue Delphinium and a dark and moody Trachelium.

It's always a pleasure and lots of fun to buy a bunch of flowers for the weekend and this series of blog posts, called 'A Bunch for the Weekend, will show you how you can make quick and easy flower arrangements for your home.

Buy the flowers where it's convenient and easy for you whether that is from a flower stall, farmers' market, the supermarket or a florist.

Always try to buy seasonal flowers - they will be a lot cheaper.

Make sure you condition the flowers as soon as you get home. Remove any foliage that will end up below the waterline in the vase. Trim the ends of the stems at an angle and put in fresh water as soon as possible.

I love the contrast between the pale blue hydrangea and delphiniums against the very dark Trachelium.

As a background I have used some old vintage blue and white china drainers that almost exactly matches the blue flowers.

As vases I have used various vintage silver plated items - a coffeepot, some jugs and two sugar bowls.

Some of the containers and drainers rest on a small painted foot stool and I've added a linen table runner, some light blue labels, two beautiful vintage buttons also the same blue colour and a blue cup from Sweden.

The hydrangea last for ages and you can later dry it. The Trachelium lasts for about 7 - 10 days and the Delphiniums for approximately 5 - 7 days.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Friday and a great weekend!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - I will be back On Sunday with another floral quote by someone passionate about flowers.

Tiny Blooms - # 36 - Blue and White Delphiniums

Delphinium is loved both by people growing it as a cottage garden flower - as well as by slugs - but we are not going to discuss slugs here today.....

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the container or it could be the size of the flowers or the amount of stems.

It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

A bunch of delphiniums goes a long way - I only have five stems here and I simply put them in a tall clear glass vase with straight sides.

A row of glass bottles with just a single stem in each bottle would also look fantastic along a windowsill or mantlepiece.

These tall almost regal flowers are also soft and romantic. The flowers open from the bottom so pick stems that have open blossoms only halfway up for the longest bloom time.

You don't need to do much to delphiniums - their loose, country-garden style is very much suited to make simple quick and easy arrangements.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Monday!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - I will be back later in the week with some more floral delights.

Floral Media - Blue Flowers in Blue Jugs by McQueens Flowers

Today on Floral Media I want to show you a short video. We are taking a look at what Andrea from the top London florist McQueens Flowers is doing with blue flowers using blue containers.

Andrea is using three blue enamelled vintage jugs; they are different in size and shape but are all in almost the same clear blue colour.

The flowers and foliage he is using are blue delphiniums, Viburnum 'Roseum' or Guelder Rose, eucalyptus, blue hyacinths, Euphorbia and three potted primroses as well as a little bit of moss.

In the first tallest jug he puts some tall bright blue delphiniums - mixed with a few stems of lime green Guelder Rose and some grey green eucalyptus foliage.

The second jug he fills with blue hyacinths and some lime green Euphorbia

In the third jug he puts some potted primulas or to be exact Primula auricula. He packs three plants into the jug and covers the soil with some moss.

What great colour combinations for spring and all the little arrangements are easy, quick and simple.

Just the way I like it!!

Flowers from the Flower Market - # 4 - Delphiniums

Delphiniums are magnificent at this time of year and I just could not leave the market without bringing some home. It's a flower that come in many different pink and blue colours as well as white and peach.

The one little difficulty with Delphiniums are that they are quite tall - so you need a tall vase. Tall vases become top heavy so they are not always easy to deal with but apart from that it's a great flower that you don't have to do a lot to and lasts well.

It's a flower that starts flowering from the bottom of the spike while the top still has tight buds. You will need to remove the lower spent flowers as the buds open up.

Like always condition the flowers by removing any lower leaves that will end up below the waterline in the vase. Cut the stems at an angle and put straight in a clean container with water - and leave over night in a cool place.

Delphiniums are a flower that remind me of an old-fashioned country garden and I thought these blue and white floral vases had the same feel about them.

Just to be on the safe side I put all the old vintage vases on little saucers - also blue and white floral china. Don't ever trust an old china vase - as they might leak and ruin your tabletop.

You don't need to do very much to delphiniums - they are perfect on their own and their loose country garden style is easy and charming.

Keep the tall spires all the same height to give a neat finish to your arrangement.

I was able to make one lower arrangement with a light pink Delphinium - that I only had one stem of. I cut it quite short - put it in a low vase and used some stems with unopened buds in the back. Simple and easy!

Have a Lovely Floral Day!

See you later in the week!

A Bunch for the Weekend - # 8 - Pink Delphiniums

A Bunch for the Weekend - this week is all pink. Well, to be exact it's three stems of pink Delphiniums and two stems of green Delphinium buds.

Delphiniums are made up of tall, narrow spikes - so you need a tall vase. I have used an old sake bottle - turned out to be the perfect container. It worked well as it was tall enough and everything looked in proportion.

It's a flower that starts flowering from the bottom of the spike while the top still has tight buds. You will need to remove the lower spent flowers as the buds open up.

Have a Fun and Floral Friday!

See you on Sunday for another floral quote from a flower lover!

xoxo Ingrid
