Florets - Floral Quote - # 151 - by Louesa Roebuck and Sarah Lonsdale

Florets - Floral Quote' is a series of blog posts where I feature quotes by authors - mostly well known - but you will also find some obscure ones.

All of them have written one or several books about flowers, gardening, interior styling or interior design. Many are experts in their field but what is the most important is that they are all passionate about flowers.

I love books and in my ever growing library I look for quotes that I hope will be both helpful and useful while arranging and styling flowers.

"Wandering around one of David's many industrial remnant lumber piles, being careful of snakes, I found a bed of tiny densely blue forget-me-nots. I love them so - not native, invasive, and totally perfect to me, blue, blue, blue. They can get wild and leggy, they last forever, they summon so many corny, sentimental meanings, and did I say blue?"

" Flowers have the power to animate a room. Unlike furniture and fabrics, that we choose and change with great deliberation, they are totally spontaneous, filling the space with the energy and unpredictability of the natural world. I particularly enjoy the way in which, in the course of a few days, straight stems and tight buds open to become wonderful, wild and wayward creatures. So often, a flower is at its most beautiful just before it dies. There is much to observe and learn from their natural rhythms and from their generous, unselfconscious beauty."

"Pale creamy yellows are the essence of early spring. Nature is a great designer - you only have to look at the wild yellow daffodils and soft yellow primroses growing in woodland and on roadside verges for colour inspiration. Early flowering bulbs such as narcissi and hyacinths are also highly fragrant and this is one of the added pleasures of the season. Spring yellow from cream to bright yellow offer an easy palette for the flower arranger as they mix happily with fresh lime-green foliage which is in plentiful supply at this time of year."

Creative with Flowers - # 35 - Double Multi-Coloured Tulips

This week on 'Creative with Flowers' - I'm featuring some amazing double multi-coloured pink and green tulips.

This is a little "statement" that I add to the post - briefly explaining my thinking behind the posts:

"This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in new and creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter.

As always my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!"

These delicately coloured pink and green tulips are so delightful both in colour and shape that I didn't want anything to compete with them.

I used a large white vase that has an interesting texture on the outside. I picked it up for very little money from my local charity store.

The vase is big enough to hold quite a lot of stems. I have cut the stems at slightly different heights - taller in the centre and shorter around the sides.

I choose to combine them with only white - BUT white with texture. I picked out two necklaces both made from shells. Underneath is an old sack from my grandparents country store in Sweden - it has interesting writing on it and it has a coarse and interesting texture in the weave.

In the background are three little cushions made from vintage fabrics and quilts. The backs of the cushion has sweet little mother of pearl buttons.

I have used these tulips en masse - there are nearly thirty of them - surrounded by all white. It looks light and refreshing and so right at this moment in time.

If only for the simple reason that I hope spring will soon be with us!!

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Wednesday!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - I will be back on Friday with another 'A Bunch for the Weekend' all about how to make a lovely bunch of flowers to enjoy over the weekend.

I'm looking forward to seeing you back here then.

A Bunch for the Weekend - # 101 - Pink Tulips in Zinc Vase

This week I have the pleasure to feature some beautiful pink parrot tulips and as a vase I have used a very worn and a bit rusty vintage zinc container.

Here is a little "statement" that I add - to briefly explaining my thinking behind these particular posts:

"It's always a pleasure and lots of fun to buy a bunch of flowers for the weekend and this series of blog posts, called 'A Bunch for the Weekend, I will show you how you can make quick and easy flower arrangements for your home.

Buy the flowers where it's convenient and easy for you whether that is from a flower stall, farmers' market, the supermarket or a florist.

Always try to buy seasonal flowers - they will last longer and they will be a lot cheaper.

Make sure you condition the flowers as soon as you get home. Remove any foliage that will end up below the waterline in the vase. Trim the ends of the stems at an angle and put in fresh water as soon as possible."

After conditioning the flowers let them rest for a few hours or overnight just to give them time to absorb as much water as possible. If you are able to keep them in a cool place even better.

The props that I have chosen are all black - in contrast to the grey zinc container and the rich pink colour of the tulips.

You'll find a 2 kg weight from my grandfather's country store back in Sweden, a silver bracelet from Mexico, an ornate vintage button from an old coat and a black jet brooch.

At Christmas I was given a couple of these lovely Iittala votive candle holders from Finland. The name of them are Kastehelmi - which means dewdrops - referring to the pattern on the outside of the votive candle holder.

A very coarse piece of linen cloth adds an interesting textured contrast to the smooth marble surface and the elegant lines and shape of the flowers.

I always find it interesting how tulips keep growing even after they are cut and put into a vase or container.

I also try to keep as many leaves as I can - they add texture, interest, colour contrast and beauty to the arrangement.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral weekend!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - I will be back on Sunday with another 'Florets - a floral quote by someone passionate about flowers.

I'm looking forward to seeing you back here then.

Creative with Flowers - # 31 - Double Pink Tulips and Vintage Green Glass Bottles

This week on 'Creative with Flowers' - YES! it's more tulips - one of my favourite flowers.

It's a fabulous multi-colored double tulip - that I don't know the name of.....! But I will try to find out from my supplier.

This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in new and creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter.

As always my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!

Every single flower head is different from the next one. Some are big others small, the colouration on the petals are also different - the colours are two different pink, the inside of the flower is yellow and it has streaks of green.

The leaves also vary in shape and colour and some leaves are edged with white.

The stems are taller than usual and some curve and bend others grow completely straight.

When they open up the whole flower spreads their petals and almost turns itself inside out. In the centre as an interesting contrast are some very black stamens.

I wanted this fascinating tulip to speak for itself so I kept the surrounding colours plain and simple.

A vintage apothecary jar holds the large arrangement and it sits on a knitted white vintage little hand towel that is from my grandmother's house in Sweden.

All the glass containers are vintage green glass - some are ink bottles others big jars. The only contrasting thing is the little piece of black and white fabric where the black is picked up in the black lettering and the black stamens.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous floral Wednesday!

Thanks you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer'. I will be back later in the week with more floral delights. I'll see you then.

Tiny Blooms - # 38 - Tulips in Mini Vases

I'm making a few changes to my my blog and one small change is to bring back 'Tiny Blooms'. It was right from the beginning a very popular series of blog posts, but for many reasons I decided to put it on the shelf for a while. But here we are - I'm relaunching it and I'm hoping it will be as popular as it was before.

I hope you'll enjoy it!

Tulips in mini vases

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the flower or the amount of stems I'm using; or it could be the size of the container.

It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

Tulips in mini vases

I had so much fun creating this series of flower arrangements for a feature in Gatherings Magazine. It was the spring issue 2013 and I was the Contributing Floral Styling Editor.

The lovely Editor in Chief was Heather Spriggs and Gatherings Magazine was published both as an E-magazine and in print, but it's now sadly no longer being published.

The feature was called Bulbs in Bloom and run over four pages. Half was about tulips and the other half was about daffodils.

Here is some of the text I wrote:

"Over time, philosophers and writers have often used the metaphor of spring to explain the power of remaining positive and optimistic. No other season has so much anticipation and hope for a fresh start and renewal - the world is full of potential."

Some of you might have seen the magazine - but these images has never been published on my blog before.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Monday!

Florets - Floral Quote - # 136 - by Willow Crossley

Florets - Floral Quote' is a series of blog posts where I feature quotes by authors - mostly well known but you will also find some obscure ones.

All of them have written one or several books about flowers, gardening, interior styling or interior design. Many are experts in their field but what is the most important is that they are all passionate about flowers.

I love books and in my ever growing library I look for quotes that I hope will be both helpful and useful for everybody who is arranging and styling flowers.

Deep pink tulips

" Seek out the crazy, frilly, striped parrot varieties. The crazier the better. The white and raspberry streaked 'Rem's Favourite' brings so much joy to a kitchen table. For a slightly more subtle moment, there's a pale green and pink striped sensation called ' Green Wave' or consider the lily-flowered 'China Pink', or "tall 'White Triumphator' with their elegant relaxed petals that open out into flat star shapes. One of the joys of tulips is their long life in a vase - up to two weeks - alongside their habit of starting cup-shaped, then gradually unfurling and finally dropping their petals one by one. They have a very graceful way of dying."

Snowdrops in vintage white jug

"Although the weather might be bleak, by the end of the winter season there are some real stars that start to appear through the hard soil. One of the bravest and first to bloom is the delicate snowdrop. Its fragile appearance belies an exceptional hardiness; the leaves and flowers pierce the frozen topsoil and resist frost to be one of the first flowers to be the harbinger of spring.
Snowdrop bulbs have become highly prized in the English garden. I buy single and double varieties in their hundreds 'in the green" after they have flowered and plant them out in early spring."
