Tiny Blooms - # 43 - Orange Tulips and Geum

This week on 'Tiny Blooms' I'm featuring mainly orange - orange double tulips, lily-flowering orange tulips and orange Geums - a little orange daisy like flower. They are all British grown!

Here is a little "statement" that I add - to briefly explaining my thinking behind these particular posts:

"This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the flower or the amount of stems I'm using; or it could be the size of the container. 

It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!"

Double tulips are often spectacular - and often multicoloured like this one with all it's beautiful colours from orange to green to pink and yellow. 

This one is called 'Orange Princess' - what a great name!

I have mixed them with an orange Geum called 'Queen of Orange'.  

Lily-flowering tulips are some of the most elegant - here is one called 'Ballerina' - another great name.

Just putting two or three stems in a vintage glass bottle is very effective and looks very stylish. It's also very quick and easy......!!

Creative with Flowers - # 25 - Double Orange Princess Tulips

This week on Creative with Flowers - I'm featuring a bunch of orange tulips.

Tulips are now starting to appear on the flower stalls. I always find them a very welcome sight. They are one of my favourite flowers and I think they are great to work with.  

This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter. 

As always my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!

Ten stems of colourful tulips plonked in a clear glass container. What could be easier?

 This one is called Tulipa 'Orange Princess'. It's a double tulip instead of the usual single petals that most tulips has - double tulips has many layers - giving the flowers great depth and fullness.   

Joining the tulips are three Scandinavian vases all white and minimal in their design. Well, what do you expect - after all they are Scandinavian!

From left to right: White ceramic vase with an abstract pattern on the sides by the Swedish artist Bertil Wallin. Next is a piece of white marble with a carved garland as decoration. I have no idea what it was used for, how old it is or where it's from. The small glass vase is also by Bertil Wallin and on the far right is a small mini version of Alvar Aalto's Savoy vase. 

Tulips will be available for many months now. Remember to give them plenty of water. They also keep growing in the vase so the arrangement will slightly change over time. 

If possible keep them in a place that is not too warm and put them somewhere cool over night - and they will last much longer.

If you can re-cut the stems and give them fresh water every 1-2 days. They will last approximately 5-10 days.

Tulips are great for a dining table as they are not too tall - people can see each other across the table. 

A colourful tulip arrangement will work in almost every room in the house - just think about tying in the colours of the flowers with colours already in the room.

Creative Ways with Flowers - # 1 - Orange Flowers

Orange flowers is not everybody's favourite - and more often than not it's simply because a lot of people don't like the colour orange. 

Well, I quite like orange but I have to admit that it's not an easy colour to combine with other colours. The way a vase with orange flowers is so intense in colour that it almost jumps out at you. 

At the flower stall I found one of my favourite orange tulips and a mixed bunch of orange ranunculus ranging from an orange red to almost yellow.   

Orange is the hottest colour in the spectrum and it can be an intense and challenging colour to work with. So what I have done in most of my arrangements here - is that I have followed the colour-wheel and picked the complementary blue colour to contrast with the orange.  

For the first arrangement I have used a dark blue handmade glass vase - many years ago it was a wedding present from the glass blower herself. I made a loose arrangement with the orange tulips and the dark blue vase nicely complements the flowers. 

For the second arrangement I have used a pastel blue vintage jug from the 1930's. It's a little bit more of a challenging and unusual light blue colour that I'm using here to complement the orange ranunculus.

In the third I'm featuring a Swedish hand-blown glass bowl by Bertil Vallien. The tulip stems are cut very short and sits neatly upright next to each other in the bowl. 

For the last arrangement I had to cheat - I simply couldn't find a blue vase anywhere that would fit this mixed hand-tied bunch I made of the tulips and the ranunculus - so I used a vintage cut glass vase. But it ended up being the perfect size as well as nice and neutral. So it all had a happy ending!

DIY Flower Tips and Inspiration - # 14 - Orange Tulips and Ranunculus

This week 'DIY Flower Tips and Inspiration' - is mostly just orange. Tulips are appearing more and more on the flower stalls and Ranunculus have just popped up their pretty heads.

I found some gorgeous orange Tulips - the petals have streaks of darker colours that gives a variegated marbled effect - and makes them look just super pretty!

Some of the bright orange Ranunculus are in tight buds others have opened up showing their layers and layers of thin petals.

The vase is a vintage jar from Sweden and the sugar bowl is from the 1930's Art Deco period and from my grandmother back in Sweden. The chevron black and white fabric becomes an interesting contrast in colour and form.

The two flowers contrast each other in texture but match almost perfectly in colour. For somebody like me who loves colour - this combination just makes me swoon!!

Floral Styling - A Simple Flower Arrangement - # 5 - Orange Tulips

Bright orange and yellow tulips might not be the easiest to combine with other colours. Instead of trying to find contrasting colours I decided to just add even more orange and a bit of brown - in the form of an orange and brown cushion, some brightly painted wooden horses and a brown glass jar.

The flowers are from my local farmers' market and after conditioning them by removing lower leaves and cutting the stems at an angle and then leaving them to stand in water for a while - I arranged them very simply in the jar.

The container that I have used as a vase is a vintage brown glass apothecary jar with an interesting enamel label with lettering and it normally has a round glass lid.

I left as many leaves as possible just to break up all the orange and yellow with a bit of green. I also cut the stems a little bit shorter than normally - tulips continue to grow in the vase - as I wanted the flowers to stand quite straight in a tight bunch and not flop over the sides of the vase. 

I want to tell you a little bit about these brightly painted horses. They are traditional Swedish Dala horses and are probably something that you would see in most Swedish homes. The name comes from the province where they are made - Dalarna. They are all hand carved and hand painted and today its a symbol of Dalarna and Sweden. Dala horses are often used by designers on fabrics, as jewellery and in knitting patterns. 

My little collection of Dala horses is a mixture of old and new collected over the years. The faded one on the right is probably from the 1950's.
