Tiny Blooms - # 29 - White Double Daffodils

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the container or it could be the size of the flowers or the amount of stems. It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

I know I'm showing daffodils again! 

I just wanted to show you another double daffodils - this time it's a gorgeous white double daffodil or Narcissus 'Erlicheer' as it's also called. 

It's creamy white in colour and is excellent as a cut flower. It doesn't look like a traditional daffodil, with it's usual yellow trumpet, but is fully double so the flower looks ruffled. Some people say it resembles a carnation. As an added bonus it's also strongly scented.

The container I have used is a vintage blue jar. It's from France and was used by French polishers and contained their furniture-polish.

I have just put a few stems in the jar and didn't feel anything else was needed. Of course I have added a few vintage props - a blue painted basket and a blue-green giant glass bottle. As a rule I don't trust old ceramics or pottery - so I put a small dish under the jar just to be on the safe side and avoid any damage to wooden surfaces. The little tealight holder is contemporary.

FLOWERS by ingrid and titti - A Floral Easter!

Daffodils is a classic spring flower and will often flower around the time of Easter. The bright yellow colour is a welcome sight in any garden or park. 

This daffodil that I have used here is one called Narcissus Tête-À-Tête and its only about 20 cm tall. Small and very sweet and perfect for using as single stems in any small vase or container.

I have a collection of clear glass bottles - from as small as 5 cm to quite tall ones. Some are new but most of them are vintage often picked up in charity stores or flea-markets for very little money. 

Some have company names embossed in the glass, others are old perfume bottles and some have worn labels on the side.

When I cut the flowers in my garden I made sure I cut the stem as long as possible. The flowers are not very tall and to get the right proportions you want to have the flexibility to pair up the right size flower with the right size bottle. 

Start by putting the flowers with the longest stems in the taller bottles. Match the other stems to shorter bottles and vary the height of the flowers so that there is variation in each container.

In this case I have put most of the bottles on a little white painted footstool with a vintage metal bird my son gave me for Mother's Day.

This kind of flower arrangement can go down the middle of your Easter table or gather the collection on a tray and place it on a side table. Small bottles like these are charming on a bedside table in the guest bedroom or on a coffee table.

Pick some daffodils from your garden and dig out some bottles and make little arrangements - what could be easier!

A Bunch for the Weekend - # 46 - Bright Yellow Daffodils

This week on 'A Bunch for the Weekend' - I'm featuring three different daffodils. Their botanical or Latin name are Narcissus.

The three are: 

- the small Narcissus with an orange middle is called 'Golden Dawn' 

- the single daffodil with the ruffled cup is called 'Carlton' 

- the large double daffodil is called 'Golden Ducat'.

They are all from the organic flower farm Forever Green Flower Company - so all British grown. 

You'll need:

- about 25 stems of daffodils, here I have used 9 'Golden Dawn', 9 'Carlton' and 7 'Golden Ducat' 

- a medium sized clear glass containers - I have used a clear glass apothecary jar

- three shimmering mini glass bud vases in gold, silver and green

- five little toy "spring lambs"

- a small piece of fabric - green with cream dots

- ribbon, a light yellow grosgrain stitched ribbon from Jane Means, to tie around the neck of the container

For conditioning the flowers - you'll also need:

- a pair of florists scissors

- a florist bucket filled with fresh water

Condition the flowers by removing any leaves that would end up below the water line in the vase. This is to reduce any growth of bacteria from deteriorating leaves. Also remove any broken or bruised leaves.

Cut the stems at an angle - this is to increase water absorption.  

Put in a clean container with fresh water and leave in a cool, dark place over night or at least for a few hours, to let the flowers absorb the maximum of water, before making the final arrangement.

You might have to re-cut the stems while making the final arrangement to suit the size of the vase or container and to get the right proportions.

Arrange the flowers in your hand - making a round dome-shaped bouquet - mix the flowers so that you have an even spread of the three different sized flowers throughout the arrangement.

Before you make the final cut - put the container at the edge of the work surface and hold the arrangement next to it to measure where to cut. You want the lower flowers to sit just above the edge of the container.

This arrangement is as bright as they come and really show that spring is here to stay. I certainly welcome bright yellow daffodils at this time of year - but maybe not so much yellow the rest of the year. What about you - is yellow a colour you use all year around?

FLOWERS by ingrid and titti - Happy Easter!

The theme for FLOWERS this week is 'Easter' and here in the UK its four days of holiday!

The flowers I have used are Narcissus 'Erlicheer' - its a highly scented cream double narcissi that has multiple florets on each flower stem. What a beauty!!

I bought he flowers at my local farmer's market where the lovely Cel Robertson and her partner Rob are back selling spring flowers from their weekly stall every Saturday morning. Cel grows all the flowers they sell on their organic farm Forever Green Flower Company in Norfolk and drives down to London every week. 

We often associate Easter with the colour yellow - well yellow is lovely, bright and cheerful - but I find that a lot of people say they don't like yellow.

So I decided to go for a white and cream Easter. I made a hand-tied bunch and put them in a white vintage jug - simple and easy. The flowers are so beautiful just on their own I felt they didn't really need anything else.

How do you like my mini chicken in her little basket? I bought it a few years ago from an antique shop out in the country - in a part of Sweden called Österlen - in the south of the country.

I made a birds-nest out of raffia, bakers twine and chicken feathers. Its very simply made by taking a small handful of natural coloured raffia and making a circle - cut three lengths of baker's twine and make three ties around the raffia to hold it in place - place as many feathers as you like - around the sides and the top of the little nest - by placing them into the raffia and under the tied twine. That is it - quick and simple.

These wooden eggs I'm told were used to encourage chickens to lay eggs. They still have some of the original paint. Also bought from the same antique store in Sweden as the chicken in the basket.

The small quail eggs are real - they are empty - the content is already eaten. I think they look sweet in the little nest.

Pompoms are always fun and these white fluffy ones are perfect for the white colour scheme. I'm not sure which ones I like the best the honeycomb kind or these ones. What do you think?
