Florets - Floral Quote - # 138 - by Hans Blomquist

Florets - Floral Quote' is a series of blog posts where I feature quotes by authors - mostly well known but you will also find some obscure ones.

All of them have written one or several books about flowers, gardening, interior styling or interior design. Many are experts in their field but what is the most important is that they are all passionate about flowers.

I love books and in my ever growing library I look for quotes that I hope will be both helpful and useful for everybody who is arranging and styling flowers.

"It is sometimes hard to know why we like certain things more than others, why some things make us feel happy or sad. Or why we prefer one colour to another. Blue is my colour, but if you were to ask me why, the only explanation I would be able to give is that my two favourite flowers are grape hyacinths (Muscari) and forget-me-nots, and I love their rich saturated blue tones.
Although my favorite flowers, grape hyacinths appear in spring, together with wonderfully scented hyacinths, I always associate the colour blue with summer - for the hot, sunny days with blue sky overhead."

Creative with Flowers - # 30 - Pale Blue Hyacinths and Pittosporum

This week on 'Creative with Flowers' - I'm featuring some gorgeous pale blue Hyacinths mixed with variegated Pittosporum foliage.

This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in new and creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter.

As always my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!

Usually most hyacinths that you buy in garden centres and street market have quite strong bright colours.

The flowers are from my usual street flower stall and the foliage is from my own garden.

I love how these pale blue flowers both contrasts and harmonise with the green variegated Pittosporum foliage.

Adding a few paper honeycomb pompoms adds both colour and fun to any celebration.

Vintage jugs in different colours and sizes are perfect for informal flower arrangements. I have found many of my jugs in charity stores or antique markets for very little money and I still pick them up if I come across one in an unusual colour - just to add to my collection.

Isn't this combination of blue and green colours just stunning?

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous floral Wednesday!

Thanks you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer'. I will be back later in the week with more floral delights. I'll see you then.

Florets - Floral Quote - # 117 - by Melanie Molesworth

"A vase of fresh flowers gives instant warmth to a room filled with junk furniture. Flawless and relatively short-lived, floral arrangements provide a graceful counterpoint to the imperfections and timelessness of old furniture. The vivid shades introduce a note of intense colour that will lift the spirits, and such an injection of vitality can be particularly welcome in neutral room schemes."

A Bunch for the Weekend - # 67 - Lisianthus, Stock and Pittosporum

Here is the second installment of my experiment that consists of for a few weeks only buying cut flowers from the supermarkets. Have a look at my last blog post where I talk about and explain what and why I'm doing it.

This time I went straight to Tesco - it was cold and raining and I didn't fancy getting wet. They had lots of already made up bunches of mixed flowers - but I'm more interested in bunches of just one type of flowers.

I bought two bunches of pink Lisianthus with a few white ones with a pink edge mixed in. They where dated the 10th and were looking fresh with no bruised petals - so I was happy!

All of the pink and white Lisianthus I put in a vintage jug that has a wide band around the middle in a matching pink colour. A few short stems went in a mini bud vase.

I also bought two bunches of pink and white stock - they did have some Pittosporum foliage mixed in - which I thought would come in useful.

When I came home and unwrapped them I found that some of the flowers were not as nice and fresh as I would have liked. You couldn't see that as they were wrapped in both brown paper and cellophane - and as you can't unwrap the flowers in the store before you buy them it's a bit tricky and you might end up with flowers looking a bit sad and past their best. Shame on you Tesco!

I made up two bunches - one with white stock and some Pittosporum foliage mixed in and a second similar one using the pink stock. For these two arrangements I also used little vintage jugs - a pink and a white one.

In a few weeks at the end of my experiment I will make a conclusion of my findings! So - stay tuned for more news on the subject!!

A Bunch for the Weekend - # 7 - White and Lacy

A Bunch for the Weekend - this week is all white and lacy. The mixed arrangement contains Orlaya grandiflora, white Sweet Williams, Alstromeria 'Rivale' and Gypsophila elegans 'Covent Garden'.

All the flowers are white and have a lacy effect. I used an all white jug as a vase and I have combined them with layers of white vintage lace on the table and surrounded the arrangement with some smaller vintage jugs also mostly white but all empty instead of filled with flowers - just as a nice contrast.

Wishing you a Fun and Floral Friday!

See you back here on Sunday for another floral quote.

xoxo Ingrid
