From the Archives - 18 November 2015 - Tiny Blooms - Pink Chrysanthemums

Here is another post in a brand new blog series - called 'From the Archives'. These will be previously posted blog posts that I feel are still relevant for some reason or another.

It will always be a post from the same calendar month as we are in or it could be some of my favourite flowers from the same season, that still lifts my spirit.

Flowers are so ephemeral - but their beauty caught on camera never fades.........!!

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the container or it could be the size of the flowers or the amount of stems in each container. It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

Chrysanthemums, pink and vintage bottles - some of my favorite things!

I found some pink spray Chrysanthemums - 'spray' just means that they are multi-stemmed - and I cut some stems down to their single flowers.

My daughter and I spent a few hours at the Country Living magazine Christmas Fair last week. There are some lovely stalls that I go back to every year. On one antique stall I found these adorable mini vintage bottles - bought five and I had an instant little collection.

Combining the two makes a charming display - the bottles are only just over 11 cm tall - so they are perfect for one or two stems.

To photograph them I have displayed them on an old French linen tablecloth - but a small collection like this works very well on a little tray - keeping them together gives them more impact.

Chrysanthemums are available all year around but are particularly welcome at this time of year when cheep flowers are sparse on the ground. Here in London its raining, its dark early and very windy. Well, the pink colour reminds me of spring!!

Florets - Floral Quote - # 124 - by Ngoc Minh Ngo

"The world is full of beauty, and few things are more beautiful than flowers. For millennia, flowers have been weaving their way into the fabric of our lives, claiming a central place in the human experience. The first flowers appeared on Earth some 125 million years ago; nothing more than primitive versions of the water lily, unassuming and thriving on the edges of the Cretaceous lakes in the shadow of dinosaurs. These long lost pioneers made their way on land, eventually evolving into the infinity of complex and showy blossoms that fascinate and delight us today. We don't know when flowers first found their place in the place of men, but vases unearthed from Mesopotamia have been found decorated with "garlands," leaving little doubt that prehistoric man was already seduced by their beauty. Like all civilization before us - from the ancient Chinese and Egyptians to the Persians, Greek, and Romans - we gather, grow, observe, admire, and record flowers for myriad reasons. We celebrate them in songs and poems, We love and mourn with flowers in hand. We borrow their loveliness to embellish our homes, adorn our dresses, and grace our table.

A Bunch for the Weekend - # 86 - Pink Snowberries and Pink Chrysanthemums

Autumn can be full of quite bright colours like these pink and white snowberries combined with strong pink chrysanthemums.

It's always a pleasure and lots of fun to buy a bunch of flowers for the weekend and this series of blog posts, called 'A Bunch for the Weekend, will show you how you can make quick and easy flower arrangements for your home.

Buy the flowers where it's convenient and easy for you whether that is from a flower stall, farmers' market, the supermarket or a florist.

Always try to buy seasonal flowers - they will be a lot cheaper.

Make sure you condition the flowers as soon as you get home. Remove any foliage that will end up below the waterline in the vase. Trim the ends of the stems at an angle and put in fresh water as soon as possible.

The botanical name for Snowberries is Symphoricarpos and it's a shrub with distinctive ornamental berries that appears in the late summer, early autumn.

When any of the berries go brown - remove them by gently holding the individual berry and twist it off it's little branch. Don't pull and don't squeeze. If you do the berry will pop and make a mess.

Look out for the gorgeous pink and white one but the all white one is also beautiful and very fresh looking.

They last for about 7- 14 days - so good value for money.

Combine them - as I have done here, with chrysanthemums or go even more dramatic with dahlias or Amaryllis.

If the branches has thick stems you might need a pair of secateurs. Trim the stem at an angles as usual and then cut an extra vertical cut up the stem. This is to increase the surface area for the plant to take up water.

Snowberries are only one of many autumn berries to enjoy at this time of year. Many works perfectly as cut flowers. Most of them are easy to condition, lasts for a long time and what could be better than enjoying all the gorgeous seasonal colours that is on offer.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Friday and a great weekend!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - I will be back On Sunday with another floral quote by someone passionate about flowers.

Creative with Flowers - # 19 - Two Pink Chrysanthemums

Let me set the scene. You are just home from a long day of being on your feet - kick off your shoes, grab a cup of herbal tea and a good book. Sit down in a favourite chair - made even more comfortable with a cushion and a warm blanket - and NOW you can also enjoy the flowers you made earlier!

This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter.

As usual my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!

What could be simpler than two different pink chrysanthemums in an old apothecary jar. The jar is a little chipped and the lid is missing but that has never stopped me making use of it.

I've used two pink colours - but twice as many stems of the darker colour with just a few of the lighter pink to lift the whole colour scheme.

The chair is a Lloyd Loom chair from the 1930's - in it's original colour! The cushion is made from a vintage patchwork quilt. Both the cushion and the chair are almost perfectly matching the flowers.

The book is by Nessa Buonomo and is called Tables fleuries. Nessa is a florist and she writes the blog La Mariee aux Pieds NusThis is her third book and if you are wondering - and yes, it's only so far published in french. She makes lovely flower arrangements - a little wild country style and very beautiful.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Wednesday!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer - I will be back on Friday with some more floral delights. Hope to see you then.

Florets - Floral Quote - # 117 - by Melanie Molesworth

"A vase of fresh flowers gives instant warmth to a room filled with junk furniture. Flawless and relatively short-lived, floral arrangements provide a graceful counterpoint to the imperfections and timelessness of old furniture. The vivid shades introduce a note of intense colour that will lift the spirits, and such an injection of vitality can be particularly welcome in neutral room schemes."

Supermarket Flowers in Jam Jars

A lot of different supermarkets sell bunches of flowers for a very reasonable price - but they often lack a bit of imagination.

I think we can do better than this! Don't you think so too?

Start off by taking the bunch apart. Condition the flowers by stripping off any leaves that will end up below the water-line in the container. Trim the ends of the stems at an angle and put in fresh water as soon as possible.

Then separate the flowers and foliage by colour or type of foliage, so that you can see how many stems of each you have.

This bunch consisted mainly of pink roses, pink spray chrysanthemums, purple stock, purple trachelium and freesia.

Nice colours and the flowers were fresh but I wanted to do something drastically different.

I wanted to use some recycled jam jars as my containers. They are quick and easy to make as they are small in size. As an added little extra I have tied a pretty ribbon around each jar.

I used all the flowers in the bunch and I didn't substitute with any other flowers or foliage. So choose carefully when you pick out the flowers in the supermarket.

I made two jars using mainly pink flowers. They are similar but a little bit different. I used two different ribbons both are light grey in colour - a nice contrast to the pink.

The third one has three different purple flowers. There I used a dark grey ribbon as a contrast to the purple.

You need to cut the stems quite short. Measure against the side of the jar. Be generous with the amount of flowers in each jar. You want it to look full and abundant not stingy in any way.

Little jam jars can be used for almost all occasions and for most rooms in the house. The added ribbons from Jane Means' collection, also make it all look a little bit more special.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Wednesday!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - I will be back on Friday with another 'FLOWERS by ingrid and titti'. The first FLOWERS, from Titti Malmberg and I, after a break over the summer.

A Bunch for the Weekend - # 75 - Chrysanthemums and Alstroemeria

This week on 'A Bunch for the Weekend' we are taking a look at some pink and purple spray Chrysanthemums and light purple Alstroemeria.

I made three hand-tied small bunches - wrapped the stems with purple raffia and put them in three glass containers.

I started off making a hand-tied bunch mixing the flowers - but I was not happy with it so I took it apart and made three small ones instead.

Just like carnations and dahlias - chrysanthemums often receives bad press. People often associate the flower with sad occasions like funerals - but I think it's largely undeserved. How can you not like this pretty flower?

Alstroemeria has trumpet-like flowers with interesting and distinct black markings - the colour also fades to yellow deep inside the flowers.

Remember to nip off any faded flowers to encourage fresh ones to bloom.

The only thing wrong with this flower is that the petals damage very easily - so handle with great care!

You can probably spot a few purple tulips mixed in with the Alstroemeria. All part of me trying different ways to arrange these flowers.

Both these flowers will last for a long time - sometimes up to three weeks. Talk about good value for money!

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Friday and a wonderful weekend!

I'll be be back soon with more floral delight from Of Spring and Summer.
