Florets - Floral Quote - # 134 - by Selina Lake

'Florets - Floral Quote' is a series of blog posts where I feature quotes by authors - mostly well known but you will also find some obscure ones.

All of them have written one or several books about flowers, gardening, interior styling or interior design. Many are experts in their field but what is the most important is that they are all passionate about flowers.

I love books and in my ever growing library I look for quotes that I hope will be both helpful and useful while arranging and styling flowers.

" Winter
It's berry season! as we get our homes ready for a cosy winter, there's a change in the type of botanicals we want to display. Mini pine trees are a nice Nordic-style addition and sprigs of red berries arranged in glass vases make a festive centrepiece for the dining table. Eucalyptus looks great placed in tall vessels or made into a wreath and it brings a wintry scent to the home."

Tiny Blooms - # 21 - Holly and Rose Hips

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the container or it could be the size of the flowers or the amount of stems in each container. It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

I have used some glossy very dark green holly foliage and to that added branches of small red rose hips. They both come as quite tall branches and I have simply cut them down to about 10-20 cm short stems.

Cut the stems at different lengths to give the little arrangement some movement and interest.

The vase I'm using is my old stand by - the mini version of Alvar Aalto's Savoy vase in white. It was designed in 1937 and is still being made and sold by Iittala in Finland. But any jar or bottle would be perfect.

Instead of just one make a whole lot of them and arrange them down the middle of the Christmas table.

This quick and easy arrangement would not take long to do - so another great one for the holiday!

    Have a Lovely Floral Monday!

I'll be back later in the week with more floral delights from
    Of Spring and Summer.

      Flowers and Ribbons - # 2 - Napkins

Over time you have probably noticed that I often feature beautiful ribbons. I'm part of a team of international bloggers who use ribbons from Jane Means' ribbon collection. Jane provides us with ribbons and we use them in some of our blog posts.

I have decided to do a regular monthly series of blog posts where I will use Jane's ribbons in combination with flowers and foliage.

This month I thought it would be nice with some easy tips on how to make your table settings festive - just in time for all the holidays coming up. I have chosen to decorate three different coloured napkins with ribbons and a selection of plant material.

I have used three different colour schemes - purple, black and red. The ribbons are all grosgrain - with off-white stitching down the edges - all from Jane's collection.

The plant material is selection of berries, hips and foliage - Ilex berries, crab apples, small rose hips and Eucalyptus leaves.

They are all quite tolerant of being out of water for several hours before they start looking a bit sad - so very good for decorating table and napkins.

In all the three colours I have simply used ribbons to tie around the middle of the rolled up napkins and I then tucked a small branch of plant material under the ribbon.

This is a quick, simple and very easy way of making your table look colourful and festive.

If you make an additional flower arrangement - remember to make it low enough - so that people can see and talk to each other across the table. If you want to make a taller arrangement just move it to a side table when you are ready to sit down.

Some people also say that you should not use strongly scented flowers in and around the dining table. It's believed that a strong scent conflicts with the aroma of food or wine - so stick to unscented flowers around food.

      Have a lovely floral day!

I'll be back next month with another 'Flowers and Ribbons' - but before that I'll be back on Wednesday with another 'Tiny Blooms' blog post.

      Do-It-Yourself Flower Tips and Inspiration - # 13 - Red Winter Branches

This week 'Do-It-Yourself Flower Tips and Inspiration' - is pretty much all red - I have more of the same branches from before but I'm also featuring some different ones.

It's a combination of Crab Apples, Rose Hips, Ilex branches and Cornus alba and they all feature red in some form or another - apples, hips, berries or branches.

You can read about the Crab Apples and the Rose Hips in a previous blog post.

With all of these branches you'll need a strong pair of scissors or a pair of secateurs to cut the stems. Before you put them in water - make a vertical cut up the stem to help the plant absorb more water.

The Ilex verticillata is a deciduous holly that loose it's leaves in late autumn to expose clusters of bright red berries on bare stems that lasts throughout the winter.

Like a lot of different flowers don't expose the berries to ethylene gas or it will cause the berries to drop - so don't put the arrangement next to the fruit bowl.

Ilex will last in a vase for between 7-14 days - so they are great value for money. They also come with berries in deep gold and yellow gold - if you are not keen on the red.

The Cornus alba or Dogwood as they are commonly called - there are many different types but this one with it's red winter stems is quite dramatic. It has long almost perfectly straight leafless stems. It can last for up to three weeks in a vase - so also god value for money. These straight branches also come in green and yellow.

All these branches will happily mix with other flowers and they last for several weeks - so perfect to buy before Christmas and they will last well into the new year.

      Enjoy your flower arranging!

Titti and I will be back on Friday with another FLOWERS with a new and different theme.
      ~ xoxo ~
