Floral Media # 15 - Tulips and Other Bulbs

On the 15 January its Tulip Day - Tulpanens Dag - in Sweden. The tulip flower is the most popular cut flower in Sweden and also one of my favourite flowers. Minna Mercke Schmidt at Blomsterverkstad photographed some stunning tulip arrangements created by Gunnar Kaj.



This is an update of a post of mine that was previously published two years ago. I'm reposting it because it gives you a little bit of the history of tulips.

Claus Dalby shows some Paperwhites planted in big planters. The bulbs are planted quite close and as a nice finish Claus has put gravel on the surface in between the bulbs. 

Erin Boyle on Gardenista shows you how to grow Lily of the Valley on a windowsill.



Miss Pickering - as she likes to call herself - is a florist and blogger, she likes to cook and has a dog she calls 'The Hound'. 
I love this wall of stacked old wooden crates in her flower shop in Stamford - full of planted and cut flowering bulbs.

Floral Media # 10 Last Minute Christmas Inspiration

Stylish wreathes for your front door - Erin Boyle from Gardenista - took a walk around Brooklyn in New York and found some interesting and unusual stuff. It also looks like everybody has a black front door!

The British gardener, TV presenter and author Sarah Raven creates a white and silver table decorations scheme that sparkles in the candle light. 

Some more wreaths with bright red rose hips - they are quite wild but beautiful - by Kendra Wilson at Gardenista.

How about making a mini Christmas tree for your window sill? Minna Mercke Schmidt from Blomsterverkstad - shows you how to make one.

Christmas can be many colours - Claus Dalby has waved his magic wand and used some unusual but very beautiful colours. 

I love Linda Lomelino's work - and I have featured her before in this post - here she has made a Saffron Cinnamon Wreath - and taken some stunning photographs.

Floral Media: Ten More Ways to Create a Green Christmas

Create a simple window-box that lasts all winter using tiny pine trees. Yet another post by the brilliant Erin Boyle who you usually find on Gardenista.

If you haven't come across Gardenista before and you are even vaguely interested in gardens, garden design, plants and flowers, it's a must! It's absolutely brilliant blog with new posts throughout the day, great to look at, fun and interesting content; and an amazing source for anything garden related.

Make a simple holiday wreath out of willow and dogwood branches. Start with making a basic frame and then add some eucalyptus branches. Very beautiful in all it's simplicity - I would be tempted to keep it up for the rest of the year. This one is from the Free People BLDG 25 Blog. 

Why not plant up a basket with winter flowering plants - like Minna Mercke Schmidt has done here. Easy, seasonal and it will last all winter.

Some more festive green decorations by Erin Boyle. I think this is very sweet and so easy to make. Big is not always better!

Here is a simple and stylish way of wrapping presents - Patricia from All Seasons blog has personalised wrapping paper - this one has the name of the blog on it then she has used simple twine, wooden tags and some ivy berries. 

Here I'm going with a bit of whimsy! What about a making a skirt out of pine branches - maybe not to wear - only for some decorative fun! Kate from Kate's Creative Space has created something out of very basic materials.

Christmas is Claus Dalby's favourite time of year and he makes some very festive decorations filled with candles and lots of sparkles - to light up those long dark nights in Scandinavia.

This DIY Alternative Christmas tree is also from Free People BLDG 25 Blog. They have used bits of nature collected from outside along with some other fun things.

Over on my Pinterest I have a board called 'Branches and Trees for Christmas'. There are nearly 300 images and they are all 'green'. I love Pinterest and I think it's the most amazing source for inspiration. Please, take a look and tell me what you think!

How to pick The Perfect Christmas Tree by Amanda Gutterman at Gardenista. Some of us take a long time to pick out our tree so here is a little guide to help you.

Linda Lomelino from Call Me Cupcake lives and works in Sweden. She bakes, cooks and makes ice cream and have already written two cookbooks. Here she shares her recipe for a soft Gingerbread Cake and she had decorated the cake in a festive Christmas way.

How to make Botanical Ice Lanterns by Erin Boyle at Gardenista. Fun to make and pretty to look at - but you have to live somewhere very cold.
