Floral Media # 12 BY FRYD - e-magazine by Jeanette Lunde

LUNDE&MORK1

Jeanette Lunde writes the blog By Fryd - she lives and works in Norway - and she is a graphic designer, interior stylist, teacher, photographer and editor-in-chief of the e-magazine By Fryd.

Jeanette has recently started to work with Hilde Mork, another Norwegian graphic designer - they met over the internet and formed the company HYSJ. Together they work in Jeanette's studio - a renovated barn that has been transformed to a beautiful white studio space. They have an on-line shop where they sell their prints and photographs.

Jeanette has just published the fourth issue of her e-magazine By Fryd - that means 'with joy'. The magazine is divided into five parts - called The Studio, x-mas, DIY, Words and My Journey.

You get to see - before and after - images of the studio space - as well as beautiful images of Jeanette's styling and photography. There are examples of Jeanette's and Hilda's work and some DIY projects including some floral styling and throughout Jeanette weaves her gentle and poetic words.

Floral Media: 91 Magazine

91 magazine was launched in 2011 by Caroline Rowland and the latest issue is just published. It's a free on-line magazine that features interiors, vintage, crafts, food, shopping and city guides.

You'll find a couple of features relating to flowers - there is a great one by Louise de Miranda about vintage apothecary bottles - perfect to use as vases. I love them and have a large collection of blue and brown ones - so I very much liked reading about their background and history.

Tiffany Grant Riley has created a fabulous tablescape in copper and green and shows you how to make a simple wreath out of some green Ruscus foliage. The beautiful photography is by Michelle Young.

There are also lots of little flower arrangements throughout the magazine - all lovely!

Last year, Caroline won the Women in Publishing New Venture Award for 91 Magazine.

This is the seventh issue and all the previous one's are all available to read on-line.

You can find out more about 91 Magazine and Caroline's blog Patchwork Harmony on all these social media.

Voyage Magazine - Food Edition

I found Voyage Magazine on my travels around the internet - it's not a magazine about flowers, flower arranging or even vintage - but about food.

I love looking at cook books and food magazines and find the photography in them a great inspiration. So when I found this one I was so delighted that I knew I wanted to share my findings.

It is created by three women - Marte Marie Forsberg, Britt Chudleigh and Ann Whittaker. They are all food lovers, Marte is a food/lifestyle photographer and stylist and she also writes a blog, Ann is a graphic designer and a blogger and Britt is an award winning wedding photographer.

While travelling through Norway and Italy they kept a journal documenting the local cuisine with images and words. In Norway they spent time cooking and eating with friends and in Italy they visited lots of restaurants in Rome and Milan.

In the back of the magazine you can find a mix of Norwegian and Italian recipes. There is also a guide to restaurants and cafés in the two countries.

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

For the next few weeks I will be posting fewer posts - I am having a little break and spending time with family.

Thanks for visiting and making such lovely comments.

See you soon!

Gatherings Magazine - Winter's Palette

This is my feature in the latest issue of Gatherings Magazine.
The winter issue is called The White Issue and the title of my piece is Winter's Palette.

Winter, as we all know, can be a cold and melancholy time of year and so you want to make your home feel warm and comforting. I love and adore colour but the Scandinavian in me is often seduced by minimalism and especially white.

For the White Issue I have created three moodboards that can work as inspiration for choosing and arranging flowers and other white objects around the home. I think flowers and art are two of the most essential elements for providing beauty and pleasure to a room and can totally transform a space. Candles are a fantastic way of providing atmosphere and give a warm and cosy feeling especially in the winter.

The flowers I have used are two kinds of large white Chrysanthemums. Chrysanthemums have been cultivated in China for centuries and are a sacred flower in Japan. The flower was brought to Europe in the 17th century and has been popular ever since. It is often overlooked as it is seen as ordinary, but it is a flower that is available during the winter months and they are also tremendous value because they often last for up to three weeks.

I have simply made both large and small hand-tied bunches of densely packed flower heads. Hand-tied simply means holding the bunch in one hand and adding to it with the other hand and turning the bunch while working, this way you end up with a lovely rounded shape.

Choosing a container for your flowers can both be tricky and fun at the same time. You can use your best crystal vase or you can do what I did and use vintage apothecary jars, a re-used French honey pot and an old Bonne Maman jam jar. Mix and match according to the size and colour of the flowers and where you are going to place the arrangement.

For the moodboards each has a different theme; one has cream ceramics in varied shapes and forms echoing the objects in the painting, the second has stacked painted wooden cubes displaying little miniature treasures and the third has a collection of glass and crystals.

I have used a wide range of different whites using a mix of old vintage objects from flea markets, a few small collections of found things, some newly bought or just created bits and pieces, inherited treasures, personal mementos from family and friends as well as things from other cultures. I have also used different textures, varying heights and some darker or black elements to give it a bit of drama.

Use flowers whenever and wherever you can, pick some from your garden, buy some from your local farmers market or your friendly florist. Flowers will lift the spirit all year around regardless of season!
