Creative with Flowers - # 11 - Allium, Alchemilla mollis and Bear Grass

This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter.

As usual my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!

This week on 'Creative with Flowers' I'm featuring big purple Alliums with some fluffy acid-green Alchemilla mollis and in a second container long narrow grasses called Bear grass.

The three plants have very distinctively different colour, shape and texture. The two main colours are complementary - the purple and the sharp green are almost opposite each other on the colour wheel.

Allium is a tall architectural flower that needs a tall and heavy vase for the whole arrangement not to topple over. I have used very large glass pickling jars.

The Alchemilla mollis is arranged as a collar around the stems of the Alliums creating great contrast and gives a lot of visual variation.

In a second container I put two bunches of Bear grass also called Xerophyllum. It gives an additional contrasting texture with it's long linear shape.

Allium comes without any foliage, the Alchemilla mollis has very few leaves so very quick and easy to remove any that might end up below the waterline in the container and with the grass you just trim the ends. All very quick and easy!

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Wednesday!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - Titti and I will be back on Friday with another themed 'FLOWERS'.

Tiny Blooms - # 33 - Peonies and Alliums

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the container or it could be the size of the flowers or the amount of stems.

It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

Big blousy peonies and big round Alliums are two flowers that often flower at the same time. So why not try to combine them?

I used a vase with quite a narrow neck and used only three stems of each flower. I varied the height to give a little bit of visual variation

They are both flowers that lasts for quite a long time - so a perfect combination. The colours also work very well together and the two big round shapes and variation in texture complement each other.

It's a lovely combination that is worth trying out at this time of year. There are also many other Alliums that you can try to combine with the peonies.  You only need a few stems to make an impact with these two flowers!

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Monday!

I'll be be back on Wednesday with another 'Creative with Flowers'.

Florets - Floral Quote - # 65 - by Vic Brotherson

" In the shop, if a vase with yellow roses is accidentally sat alongside a jug of white stock and a jar of pinks my heart will sink. On the other hand, if a bucket of lilacs is sat beside a bunch of magnolias the day will surely be good. When buying flowers it is easiest to set a palette and carry it through the house, this way you can always change your mind on what goes where. In many homes the backdrop is neutral, with accents of colour coming from fabric, art or flowers, and this makes the job of sticking to a colour theme much easier. Of course, colour is subjective (I struggle with red) but ultimately colour is there to be explored."
