Florets - Floral Quote - # 118 - by The Flower Appreciation Society

"The most common hydrangea that we see at the market is the aptly named mop-head variety. These rounded, voluptuous blooms perch on long straight stems, sitting like upside-down mops in their buckets. There are other types of hydrangeas that we like to use and buy whenever we see them. These include the various lacecap varieties, as well as Annabelle (Hydrangea arborescens) and Pink Diamond ( Hydrangea paniculata). Hydrangeas can be temperamental - sometimes we find they keep their shape even when they have dried (great sprayed gold for Christmas decorations) - other times they wilt almost as soon as they come out of their packaging. We suggest putting them in a bucket of cold water immediately, giving them a good spray (again using cold water) and searing the ends. To sear the ends you can either dip it in boiling water or hold it over a flame for a few seconds."

Florets - Floral Quote by The Flower Appreciation Society

Some of you might remember Florets - my very popular series of blog posts with quotes by florists and other people working with flowers. I did it for almost two years and clocked up nearly one-hundred quotes. The quotes were all by well respected flowery people who have written books on and about flowers.
  
Well, I have decided to relaunch Florets and the first quote is by two young London florists - Anna and Ellie from The Flower Appreciation Society. I think it's always interesting to hear peoples different views and opinions about all things floral and how to work creatively with flowers.

I hope you will enjoy the quotes and that you will come back for more.


" Dahlias are full of character, from spiky prongs, to tightly packed pompoms, to perfect water lily shapes. We buy these show-stopping blooms by the bucket. Within each bucket there is a firework display of colour: yellow, acid orange, perfect peach, blood red, bubblegum pink, dark aubergine, nearly black. The only colour left out seems to be blue. Originally wild flowers from Mexico, dahlias also belong to the daisy family.These late-summer blooms are wonderful in all sizes of arrangement but beware, their lifespan is short, perhaps because of their splendour."

Floral Media - The Flower Appreciation Society Workshop and Book

'Not Your Average Florists' Anna Day and Ellie Jauncey are the team behind The Flower Appreciation Society and they have also just published their first book - The Flower Appreciation Society: An A to Z of All Things Floral.

Last Saturday I had the great pleasure of meeting the two lovely ladies, Anna and Ellie, and take part in their British Bouquet Making workshop at the GROW London contemporary garden fair on Hampstead Heath in London.

While they were checking their social media I took a few pictures of the fabulous British grown flowers they had brought in - all placed in oversized recycled pickling jars.

Every jar of flowers were a little bit different - an array of colourful British summer flowers with a few herbs mixed in.

I had already bought a copy of their lovely and fun book and they happily posed and signed it for me.

We were shown how to make a hand-tied bouquet - the kind you hold in one hand while adding the flowers with the other and the stems form a spiral. Looks easy but takes a little bit of practice to master - so every opportunity to try it is a step in the right direction. 

We all left happily carrying an oversized and wild looking flower bouquet full of seasonal colour.

Here is the final result - my bouquet at home - in a vase.

Anna and Ellie feature cut glass vases in their book and feeling inspired I went to dig out a few that I inherited from my grandmother. 

So here we are at the end of a great day - a perfect combination of beautiful summer flowers in a vintage cut glass vase.
