Tiny Blooms - # 38 - Tulips in Mini Vases

I'm making a few changes to my my blog and one small change is to bring back 'Tiny Blooms'. It was right from the beginning a very popular series of blog posts, but for many reasons I decided to put it on the shelf for a while. But here we are - I'm relaunching it and I'm hoping it will be as popular as it was before.

I hope you'll enjoy it!

Tulips in mini vases

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the flower or the amount of stems I'm using; or it could be the size of the container.

It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

Tulips in mini vases

I had so much fun creating this series of flower arrangements for a feature in Gatherings Magazine. It was the spring issue 2013 and I was the Contributing Floral Styling Editor.

The lovely Editor in Chief was Heather Spriggs and Gatherings Magazine was published both as an E-magazine and in print, but it's now sadly no longer being published.

The feature was called Bulbs in Bloom and run over four pages. Half was about tulips and the other half was about daffodils.

Here is some of the text I wrote:

"Over time, philosophers and writers have often used the metaphor of spring to explain the power of remaining positive and optimistic. No other season has so much anticipation and hope for a fresh start and renewal - the world is full of potential."

Some of you might have seen the magazine - but these images has never been published on my blog before.

Enjoy your flower arranging and have a fabulous and floral Monday!

Thank you for visiting 'Of Spring and Summer' - I will be back on Wednesday with more floral delights from Of Spring and Summer.

Floral Media - # 24 - My Feature in Gatherings Magazine - Florals + Fabrics

This is my feature in Gatherings Magazine's spring Issue 2014 called - Artists + Artisans.

All the contributors chose an artist or artisan as inspiration and mine was the textile designer Sarah Hardaker.
* * *
The weighty linens printed with the most beautiful pastel colours by designer Sarah Hardaker were the perfect inspiration. They created a natural relationship to my floral styling and blended flawlessly with my vintage collection of little ink bottles and jugs.

* * *
All the beautiful fabrics that I have used are by the English textile designer Sarah Hardaker. She designs her own range of bespoke fabrics and wallpaper and all her fabrics are printed in England using linen woven in Scotland by small family owned manufacturing companies.

Sarah also makes handmade cushions, bags and small gift items using her fabrics and she will often personalise them with names and initials.

A lot of Sarah’s designs are inspired by nature and she uses the flowers in her garden for design and colour inspiration.

Sarah says “You can’t beat nature for this, the beauty of a dark pink Gertrude Jekyll rose with lime green Alchemilla mollis – perfection.”

Using Sarah’s fabrics along with my flower arrangements I have created inspirational floral moodboards in two different colours - pink and green.

The flowers I have picked are a mixture of tulips, hyacinths and Ranunculus as well as little snowdrops. In both moodboards I have used a lot of different vintage jugs and small ink bottles instead of traditional vases.

Mixed in with the flowers and fabrics are also an assortment of ribbons - by Jane Means, washi tape, painted clothes pegs, colouring pencils and old postcards.

Have a Wonderful Floral Day!

See you soon!

xoxo Ingrid

Floral Media # 14 My Feature in Gatherings Magazine - black + white florals

This is my feature in the latest issue of Gatherings Magazine. The winter and Christmas issue is always called The White Issue and the theme this year is Celebrate Scandinavia.

I'm the floral stylist on the magazine and a contributing editor.

I'm also very happy to tell you that the above image was the cover of the magazine.

*************

black + white florals

Eucalyptus berries have a wonderful texture and colour and works brilliantly in a white setting. I have continued with more texture and used an interesting ceramic vase designed by the Swedish artist Bertil Vallien in the 1960's.

The votive candle holder is from the Finnish company Iittala. It'is called Kastehelmi, the Finnish for 'dewdrops' and refers to the bubbles in the glass.

The cushion in the background is made from vintage French linen and has a beautifully monogrammed 'E' on the front panel. A seasonal little parcel and bauble complete the picture.

The Viburnum tinus has small round almost black berries and the Symporcarpus or Snowberries has bigger plump round white berries or fruits. With the stems cut very short i have used little white vases with black drawings called Caramba, designed by the Swedish glass artist Ulrica Hydman Vallien for the glass factory Kosta Boda in the 1980's.

Snowberries are very versatile and can be used with their stems cut short and used in small vases or left long and used in large arrangements. I have also seen them used stripped of all their leaves giving them a dramatic look with pure white berries on dark stems. Combine them as here with a votive candle and a little wrapped present.
Ribbon is from Jane Means collection.

"Five Gold Rings" just like the words in the Christmas song 12 Days of Christmas - the five gold rings in this case are two kinds of Swedish brass curtain rings; I have added some extra seasonal sparkle with gold glitter twine and a vintage Christmas bauble.

Candles and candle holders are very much part of Swedish interiors adding a sense of warmth during the long, dark, cold winters. Here are four black wrought iron candle holders with tall, slim white candles. For the holiday season I have mixed them with vases of seasonal berries, vintage Christmas tree baubles and a little Christmas present wrapped with white tissue paper and bakers's twine.

Scandinavians often combine the modern with antiques in unusual and clever ways and they take pride in their heritage and traditions. Here are some antique cups with gold decorations and some vintage Christmas tree baubles on a pile of antique psalm books. Both the cups and the psalm books are heirlooms passed down through several generations.

A white on white theme - white Gypsophila or Baby's Breath in a white vase with ridges, five silver coloured baubles on a white fabric and a white painted wooden background - simple and effective.

Floral Media - Gatherings Magazine Fall 2013

Gatherings Magazine has just published their Fall Issue for 2013 - it's called Rustic Romance. The Editor Heather Spriggs Thompson has done an excellent job as usual.

I'm one of the Contributing Editors and the Floral Stylist on the magazine. Here is part of my feature for this issue.

*****
Creating seasonal flower arrangements in deep, dark, rich tones, there are lots of flowers and foliage you can try.

The main flower I have in the arrangements is the Hydrangea in inky blue and purple tones, mostly arranged on their own - the big flower heads have a lot of texture and colour; and they create enough impact just by themselves and often don't need any other flowers. Hydrangeas are a flower arranger's dream flower as they are easy to arrange and last for ages.

Image AboveBerries are a favourite of mine especially for autumn arrangements; I like these lovely green unripe blackberries that mix beautifully with the Hydrangea. The container is an antique silver-plated coffee pot, in the background is a decorative Victorian metal bracket. The silver grey colour is repeated in the old round wire-framed glasses with its decorative case that once belonged to my grandfather. The book is by Dante and has a beautiful decorative cover with drawings on the spine.

Another striking flower is the Eryngium, sometimes also called Sea holly, with its steel-blue flowers and bracts. I have used it on its own but it also works well in mixed arrangements.

Left: A vintage clock face - faded and chipped over time - makes an interesting textured background to a floral display of Eryngiums in an Art Deco perfume bottle..

Right: A bunch of handwritten love poems written by my father - tied with a lace ribbon and decorated with a small bunch of Hydrangea. All displayed on a fully functioning 1930's Art Deco L. C. Smith typewriter with spools of inked fabric ribbon.

Left: A collection of vintage blue glass ink bottles - when everything was hand written with ink - make wonderful little vases for single flower stems.

Right: Old letters from Sweden with stamps and postmarks from the early 1900's - displayed in an antique letter holder with Chinese motif.
