Creative with Flowers - # 23 - Red Dahlias

It's hard to believe that it's the first of November and one of my favourite flowers are still flowering and available to buy at farmers' markets in London. 

This week we are taking a look at some gorgeous red ball Dahlias.  

This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter. 

As always my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!

Ball-Dahlias are described as - "fully double, ball-shaped, or slightly flattened at the top". The little florets are spirally arranged and the tips are rounded or blunt. 

I have made a very easy arrangement - straight in the vase or as in this case a large vintage pickling glass jar.

Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line in the container. I have kept any above that on the stems as well as all the unopened buds - just to add some interesting green texture.

As always I add a few props - that either match in colour or have an interesting contrast of colour.

This time I have also used a vintage basket - bought in Sweden at a 'loppis'. The Swedish version of flea-market or car boot sales.

I filled it with old garden tools - some were my father's and I also have a few that belonged to my grandmother.

In the background hangs a kilim rug in beautiful faded colours. 

It's November and the evenings are getting longer. I light lots of candles every evening at dinner. It adds some light and a welcoming warming glow.

I love these little beaded tea-light holders that I found in a charity store. The small coloured glass beads adds a bit bling and sparkle to any dark evening.

Floral Media - Sublime Dark Dahlia Flower Arrangement with Sarah Raven

Sarah Raven shows you how to make one of her wild and beautiful flower arrangements. She is using contrasting colours and tall fillers to give impact to the arrangement.  



The video is just over 11 min long and in it Sarah takes you through each step and talks about the flowers including the botanical names.

Creative with Flowers - # 20 - Bright Red Dahlias for the Hall

I love having a bunch of fresh flowers in my hallway. It makes me happy to see some colourful blooms when I arrive home and the bigger the better!

This series of blog posts - called 'Creative with Flowers' - are about using flowers in creative ways. It could be about how the flowers are combined - maybe in a little bit of an unusual way. It might be the choice of vase - maybe not a vase at all but a container that could be anything from jugs, bottles, jars, tins or teapots - vintage or new it doesn't matter. 

As always my arrangements will be quick and easy - and there will always be lots and lots of colour!

The hallway can easily become cluttered with coats, shoes, bags, keys and all kind of other things dumped on the floor as soon as you come inside the door. 

If you are lucky enough to have a hall with room for a table - a container with an arrangement of daffodils and tulips at springtime. Big bunches of pretty summer flowers during the summer months.

Sunflowers, Chrysanthemums, or like here, Dahlias are perfect in the hall during the late summer and autumn. Why not try some branches with crabapples or other colourful berries during the winter.  

A folded piece of fabric that picks up the colour in the flowers is a quick and easy way to create a temporary tablecloth. The one I've used, even has a pattern with trees in autumn colours.

Work with what's available each season and your hallway will be transformed and a colourful and beautiful arrangement will greet you when you arrive home.

FLOWERS by ingrid and titti - Late Summer Palette

FLOWERS is a series of blog posts that Titti Malmberg, of HWIT BLOGG, and I create a couple of times a month. Each time we work to a theme and we post at the same time.

We met on the internet and became friends. Titti lives just outside the beautiful coastal town of Karlskrona in Sweden, and I live in London, a vibrant big city.

In FLOWERS blog posts we share inspiring tips and ideas, and show that arranging flowers does not have to be difficult and expensive.

This time on 'FLOWERS by ingrid and titti' -  the theme is 'A Late Summer Palette'. 

Autumn has such an amazing colour palette and these two Dahlias are no exception. As a third little side arrangement I used a jam jar where I added a few stems of pink Sedum and a few little short stems of dark Cotinus foliage. Both from my garden. 

I also gathered some golden hops from my garden and displayed them in a little basket. 

The big leaves are from a plant called Vitis coignetiae. It's a very vigorous climber that can grow several meters each season - so you need to give it plenty of room to grow. The leaves turns bright red later on in the autumn. 

Later flowering Dahlias will mix well with autumn berries and autumn coloured leaves. Dahlias are not very long-lasting but while they are flowering they are magnificent. So enjoy them while you can! These Dahlias are from Forever Green Flower Company.

I have used two vintage giant pickling jars for the Dahlias. The two small wicker baskets with handles and the hessian adds to the late summer palette.

Tiny Blooms - # 37 - Two Pompon Dahlias

Dahlias comes in many different shapes, sizes and colours. Today we are taking a look at some pompon dahlias in two different colours. 

This series of blog posts - called 'Tiny Blooms' - are about small flower arrangements. Small - might be the size of the container or it could be the size of the flowers or the amount of stems. 

It can also be that the arrangement is minimal both in presentation and that it's simple, quick and easy to do. Apart from that there are no other strict rules - I'm allowing myself a lot of creative freedom!

I love dahlias - they were out of fashion for a long time but are now back in favour and they are more popular than ever. 

At this time of year my two nearest farmers markets are now selling dahlias in every colour of the rainbow.

I find it very hard to resist the temptation to buy a bunch of every colour. Well, that is never a good idea! Some dahlias only last for a few days but most last for about 5-7 days.   

Enjoy the dahlias while they are around, mix a few colours or just use one colour on it's own. Leave a bit of foliage at the top to bring in some green between the big flower heads. Also keep the flower buds as a contrast and added texture - even though they might never open up if they are closed tightly.
