There are few things that are as welcoming as a big bright bunch of flowers by the door to greet you or your guests when you first arrive.
We have had many gorgeous sunny days here in London during the month of October and these images are taken on one of those days.
Oh, how I love autumn and the unpredictable English weather!
I decided to try out two different autumn flowers - Asters and Chrysanthemums. Both readily available at this time of year and very reasonably priced.
The containers I used are vintage Swedish salt glazed pottery jars originally used for pickling herring or pickled gherkins.
The bright orange Chrysanthemums I mixed with some crab apples in the same colour.
The purple Asters had so many different shades - I didn't think they needed any thing else - they were bright enough on their own.
The Asters have quite a few leaves on the stems - so make sure you remove all that will end up below the waterline in the container.
The Chrysanthemums has fewer leaves and the crab apples has even fewer - so they are quick and easy. Cut the stems at an angle and make an extra vertical cut up the stems on the crab apples - for that you will need a sturdy secateurs. That way they absorb more water.
I love crab apples - they come in many different shades of orange and red. They lasts for ages and are great to display at Christmas and when you are tired of them you can put them outside for the birds and squirrels to enjoy.
While you are making the arrangement - cut the stems at different heights so there is both movement and interest all over.
I tried the two arrangements in different positions at the front of my house - by the door as well as outside window sills. I have a black front door and my windows are painted white. The arrangements looked great in both places. But I think my favourite was the orange arrangement both against the black door and on the white window sill.
Please, go over to Titti's blog and have a look at how she has interpreted the theme this week. Here is a link to her blog HWIT BLOGG.
Enjoy your flower arranging and have a great floral day!
I will be back on Sunday with another Florets - floral quotes by a flower lovers.

Ingrid, your brilliant mums really do benefit from the firey, shiny crabapples. What a great combination. I also agree with you about how well the vintage Swedish salt glazed vessels suit each arrangement.
ReplyDeleteThese would be wonderfully welcome additions to any doorway.
Happy weekend to you. xo
