What would Christmas be without its food and spices.
The list of traditional aromatic Christmas spices is quite long.
In the photograph I have also included apple and orange rind for a bit of colour.
Most of these ingredients are used in baking and drinks at Christmas.
At other times of the year all over the world you will find recipes that includes warming spices.
At Christmas these spices are included in drinks like mulled wine and cider.
The mincemeat inside mince pies usually includes nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger.
Ginger bread or biscuits often has ginger, cloves, cinnamon and cardamom.
A lot of Christmas puddings recipes has cinnamon and nutmeg.
In Sweden the traditional 'lussekatter' or saffron bun includes saffron, cinnamon or nutmeg.
Cloves are also often used on a baked ham. Towards the end of the roasting after you have removed the skin. You score the fat and stud the surface with whole cloves.
As with the nuts, I absolutely love this composition, and the wonderful simplicity of it. So nicely done!

Ingrid, I will be beginning my Christmas baking soon, and have already got some of the spices on hand. I also have a collection of cookie cutters in various shapes all ready to go.
ReplyDeleteMight have to get ahold of some cloves and oranges to make some pomanders. Once the oranges are properly studded with the cloves, they will get dusted with cinnamon. What a delightful scent as they season.
Also have started some fledgling paperwhite bulbs.
I do love this season!
