Warming Pumpkin Soup

A warming pumpkin soup right now sounds like a great idea!
As the temperatures are dropping eating something warm for lunch instead of the usual salad feels just right.

There are a lot of different recipes out there. Almost every cookery writer has there own version.
Delia Smith call hers Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Melting Cheese.
Jamie Oliver has his version of roasted pumpkin soup.
Martha Stewart of course has one as well, that she calls Harvest Pumpkin Soup.

The basic recipe is more or less the same and very easy to make. What can vary is the seasoning, the fat content and how smooth you like your soup.
They say that the harder your pumpkin is to cut, the sweeter and firmer it's flesh will be and the more body and bite your supper will have.
So.....a  word of caution!! Please, be careful when you cut the pumpkin!

I was surprised that one of my favorite food writers Nigel Slater did not have a pumpkin soup recipe in his latest book Tender. It is a cook book full of recipes where he uses vegetables from his own garden.
He has a lot of other wonderful recipes though that is worth trying!

  1. Hi Ingrid,

Pumpkin soup is one of my autumn favourites. I especially like the soup when it has djintan, ketoembar and djahé as ingredients!

Delia Smith and Nigel Slater are both two of my favourite food writers as well. I especially like the books Nigels Slater wrote about his childhood. They are a great read!

    Lieve groet, Madelief

  6. Dear Ingrid, I do like soup at all times of the year! I virtually live on Gazpacho in the summer, I love early spring vegetable soup and, as you say here, there is nothing quite like Pumpkin soup for autumn. It is so gloriously comforting on chilly days.

  8. Ingrid, you have got me thinking that I just might make some pumpkin soup soon. Last weekend I made a delicious apple crisp/crumble with apples from the farmers market, sugar, butter, a bit of flour and a fresh supply of cinnamon.

Maybe that cinnamon might become part of some pumpkin soup? I can go to the farmers market again this Saturday.

    Best wishes.

  13. Dear Ingrid, your picture of pumpkin soup is so inspiring. Now I am craving some, with ginger and allspice, maybe a little shredded coconut and toasted almond slivers on top. Yum!

    Have a great weekend! :)

  14. Your photo is so inviting Ingrid... well, all of your photos are. This one however warms the viewer with the image of hot soup. The color of pumpkin is so gorgeous and perfect to represent fall. I make acorn squash soup but must try pumpkin too this year. Have a lovely weekend. ;>)

  15. Good morning Ingrid!!!!

AS a soup LOVER - I really really enjoyed your post - an how ODD, that Nigel Slater does not have a recipe in his book! I am surprised!

Beautifully photographed, it makes me want to eat it NOW! (Soup for breakfast? Maybe not :)!)

Visited Woodbridge with a friendly yesterday and we had a pumpkin and coconut soup for lunch (outside!) - which was just YUMMY!!!!

Enjoy your weekend!!! It looks like a gorgeous autumnal day up here!

  19. Hi Ingrid, I adore pumpkin soup, pumpkin pie, anything! In northern Italy once I had pumpkin ravioli which was so incredible I still think about it. Your photo and arrangement are gorgeous as always! xo – g

  20. I'm about to make my own pumpkin soup this week; how essential is it to use your own stock.. I never have any "some I made earlier" to hand but I loathe the idea of using pre-bought.
